Blacking up the DL44!

Well this was super exciting!! I did some research into 'painting' a proper metal (Alu) replica weapon... and before painting it I found some information about using 'Aluminium Black'.

After a few coats and being left for 10 mins this happens : 


So you then rub it down with a little gun oil or something and a rag, and it changes completely.


This was really simple, it cost me £13 and no spraying/sanding etc. Its got a real authentic metal feel and look to it now and the weathering just requires some light sanding down to the metal.

And so it begins...  I've always loved Han.. I think he's my favourite character. I've already done a Chewie costume (see my other blog) and I always loved the Hoth scenes where they were hunting the probe droid. I've decided to build a Han Solo Hoth costume, to be as accurate as possible and also covered in snow! It's going to be cold looking, dirty, and hopefully keep me warm when I do those outside cold troops (hello London premiere!) Hopefully this blog will be useful to anyone else following my build as there doesn't seem to be many of these costumes out there at the moment (I can find 4 globally).

Hoth Boots - UPDATE!

These have been an absolute pain. Aside from the dodgey Chinese sellers sending rubbish I sent back, and then 'claiming' my return didnt arrive, losing money, buying a second pair etc... I'm pretty happy with how these turned out in the end! So here's what I had for reference. Not a lot to go on. Screengrabs arent much help either, nothing really shows his boots in detail at any point. Here is how my boots looked when they arrived : So started to work on these. But I noticed a few things along the way : 1. His boots are a different colour at the bottom to the top. Suede coloured bottom 'shoes' with an off grey/suede coloured boot calve attachment. So I have mimicked this with spray paint. I used chalk paint to get the effect on the suede. It turned out great. 2. Han's Cap...

So after some research I have found out that Han's cap is not the same as everyone else's! I will not settle for RL's "a cap will do" requirement from the CRL... So i'm going all out to get the right one! Met a lovely guy on Etsy called "mrhemmingsworkshop" who is making Hoth caps. I explained to him how anal I was about details and asked (given reference) would he update them and make me one. He agreed! He sent me these after finishing what I had asked for...   I am completely chuffed with this! It's amazing work... I then watched the film frame by frame and noticed something... His cap doesnt have the chin flaps! It's cut off! This is so that it isnt poking out when he has his Parka on... makes sense actually it would have looked dumb... So a new one, custom made and Han style modified is coming for me...!!
